Topaz
Topaz is a gemstone belonging to the silicate minerals and occurs in many shades of yellow, brown, green, blue and pink. The colour varieties are usually named after their colour: blue topaz, pink topaz and so on. There are also special trade names such as Imperial topaz, London Blue topaz and Swiss Blue topaz.
The name Imperial topaz originated in nineteenth-century Russia. At the time the Ural Mountains were the main source of topaz, and the pink gem mined there was named after the Russian tsar. Owning it was reserved for the imperial family. Today this colour variety is one of the most valuable.
London Blue topaz is a specific variety known for its deep, intense blue colour, often with hints of grey and green.
